This new refrigerant R-454b is a lower carbon footprint and is slightly flammable. This refrigerant is only available in units manufactured after January 1, 2025 and is not used in existing r-410a equipment. more details will be coming soon.
EPA DEADLINE FOR THE CFC BASED R-22 MANUFACTURED USE IN ALL BRANDS ENDED JANUARY 1, 2005. Phasing out has finally came.
9-16-2022 Due to recent availability, cost and phaseout of CFC R-22, we are no longer be carrying this refrigerant or using alternative refrigerants to retrofit.
For almost 30 years, our industry knew this refrigerant would cease due to the EPA.For this reason including due to the availability, overpriced cost and the 2023 Department of Energy Protocol going in effect Jan 1, 2023 for higher efficiency systems mandate. All CFS'S are banned due to global warming. While we continue to service these systems and do make electrical repairs we will no longer make any refrigerant r-22 related repair.
We have been told that the Goverment regulated CFC R-22 availability will end somewhere around 2020 and will no longer be available for sale after 2025, this end date came sooner.

Complete Phaseout of R-22: As you are aware, R-22 has been on a phase out schedule for several years. January 1, 2025 begins a final phase out date since it will no longer be available per EPA.
Here is what you need to know: Beginning January 1, 2020, it will no longer be permitted to produce or import R-22 into the United States.
After January 1, 2020 only recycled, AHRI-700 certified reclaimed product or virgin R-22 sold from existing stockpiles can be used for servicing existing equipment.
After 2020, the servicing of systems that use R-22 or blends containing HCFC-22 will rely on recovered or stockpiled quantities. It is difficult to predict when these supplies will run out.
Because the demand for R-22 is greater than what is being produced, retrofitting with another different refrigerant could be the next option on the customers mind. A replacement system is usually the best decesion if the R-22 system has leaks and needs service but is no longer under warranty.
Bill Owens Heating & Air Inc understands that some customers have other companies to consider a cost conscious retrofit of other refrigerants. These refrigerants have proven to reduce capacity and only prolong the inevitable. Some customers may prefer to do a retrofit instead of replacing the system with a new R-410A system.
